Saves More Ink?

During the daily operation of a UV flatbed printer, printhead maintenance is unavoidable. When dealing with minor nozzle clogging or missing lines in prints, operators usually have two options: auto cleaning or manual ink priming. From an ink-saving perspective, the two methods differ significantly.

Auto Cleaning: Convenient but Fixed Ink Consumption

Auto cleaning is a built-in maintenance function of the printer. By clicking the cleaning button in the software, the machine follows a preset process, drawing ink from the cartridges to the printhead and flushing it through the nozzles to clear blockages.

The main advantage of auto cleaning is its convenience and standardization, requiring little operator involvement. However, its ink consumption is preset and relatively fixed. Whether the clogging is minor or severe, the printer performs the complete cleaning cycle. A single cleaning process may consume several milliliters of ink. When used frequently, the accumulated ink usage can become considerable.

Manual Ink Priming: Flexible but Experience-Dependent

Manual ink priming is typically performed using a syringe or the printer’s ink priming function to manually push ink toward the printhead and allow it to flow out.

Operators can target only the affected channels based on the actual situation. From an ink-saving standpoint, manual ink priming is more flexible. If only one or two nozzles are missing, a small amount of ink is often enough to restore proper flow, reducing unnecessary waste.

The Right Choice Depends on the Situation

From a purely ink-saving perspective, manual ink priming is usually the better option, especially for routine maintenance and minor nozzle issues. However, this does not mean auto cleaning has no value.

For beginners with limited maintenance experience, or when restarting a printer that has been idle for a long period, auto cleaning provides a safe and standardized cleaning solution.

Recommended Approach

A practical strategy is to try manual ink priming first when dealing with minor issues, and use auto cleaning as a backup if the problem persists.

At the same time, good maintenance habits can significantly reduce the frequency of nozzle clogging. These include sealing and moisturizing the printhead after daily use, and regularly cleaning the wiper blade and capping station. Preventing clogs in the first place is the most effective way to save ink.

Conclusion

Ultimately, saving ink is not about choosing one method over the other. It comes down to using the right maintenance method when needed and following proper daily maintenance practices, ensuring every drop of ink delivers its full value.
